Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, and cosmologist. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his most well-known work, Histoire Naturelle. Original and delightful engravings from the 1853 edition featuring le geai bleu de l’Amérique du Nord (North American blue jay), le geai commun (Eurasian jay), le rossignol (nightingale), and le rouge-gorge bleu de l’Amérique septentrionale (blue robin of North America), custom framed and matted.

19th century Greenland Whale Fishery – hand colored etching and lithograph of whale hunting at the coast of Greenland. Several boats, people, horse and a polar bear. Period clothing and vessels. Framed with gold edged matted. Nautical and historical collectible.

THE ARTIST
Alois Arnegger, (1879-1967) was an Austrian scene painter, best known for his romantic landscapes of rural life and architecture along the Mediterranean coast. Arnegger drew inspiration from the Romanticism movement and the Barbizon School, which pioneered the Naturalist aspect in landscape painting.
He became famous as a scene painter around the 1920’s where his focus was more on Italian coasts, such as Naples, Capri or Sanremo.

Vibrant custom framed 19th century floral botanical engravings from Prof. Dr. Otto Wilhelm Thome’s “Flora von Deutschland”, published in 1886. Thomé (1840–1925) was a famous German botanist and botanical artist from Cologne, best known for his compendium of botanical illustrations Flora von Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz in Wort und Bild für Schule und Haus (Flora of Germany, Austria and Switzerland in Word and Picture for School and Home). Original engravings from the 1886 edition, set of two. Plates included: Muscari racemosum Miller (grape hyacinth), and Crocus sativus l (saffron or autumn crocus).
