Vintage Design
Rare set of original “290” cantilever dining chairs by Steen Østergaard from the early production by CADO, Denmark. Made of polyamide and fiberglass with the original wool cushions in “Kvadrat” wool by Nanna Ditzel. All stamped and dated (1970) underneath. This iconic 290 cantilever chair was designed by architect and designer Steen Østergaard in 1966. It is a one-piece shell-shaped chair, with a form that still exudes futurism and clean lines of design. The chair is made of polyamide reinforced with fiberglass, dyed in full depth. The Model 290 was the world’s first cantilever chair that was molded in a single operation that took 132 seconds. It also required the largest forming tool ever created at the time. The Model 290 was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York as a tribute to modern design. NASA has this chair at their headquarters, it was also featured in several science fiction movies from the 1960s and 1970s due to its futuristic design. An iconic Danish Modern design in amazing condition.
