Floating Back Lounge Chairs in Teak and Cane by Pierre Jeanneret for Pierre Jeanneret, 1955, Set of 2

Extremely Rare Pierre Jeanneret “Fauteuil en Teck”, floating back lounge chairs, created in the 1950s for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier.
These incredible chairs are made of solid teak with seat and backrest in braided canework. Whereas the ‘sibling’ design of these chairs, the PJ-SI-29-A, are more commonly found, this particular version of the design features a floating back rest which is rarely seen and gives the design an open and airy look.

The ‘Fauteuils en Teck’ were part of the furniture from the administrative and university buildings of Chandigarh, as where these chairs come from. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Another interesting and nowadays relevant fact about these and other Chandigarh chairs is that all pieces were made from the trees which were logged because the city was built, so an early adaptation of ecological thinking. These chairs each come with their own character from being made in the 1950s, they have been restored and revised where needed to ensure quality while still showing the beauty and character of age.
